BIKO is a non-profit regional organic certification body predominantly working in Tirol, one of the federal States of Austria. BIKO is also active in Vorarlberg, Kärnten and Oberösterreich as well as in South Tyrol (Italy). It is officially approved in all Austrian federal states except Burgenland and Steiermark.

All producers are certified according to the EC Organic Regulation and, if applicable, also according to the additional rules outlined in the Codex Alimentarius. About 20 % of all certified farms are also controlled according to the private standards of Bio Austria.

Fees for 2009: Basic fee: 104.50 €; Additional fee: 6.94 € per ha pastures or fields, 17.05 € per ha special crops. By increased risk (direct marketing, split operations etc.) an extra fee of 29.15 € is charged. Addiontal fee for Bio Austria control: 11.66 €.

Almost all the operators, who have left the certification scheme have either stopped producing organic or they have totally given up farming. The figures provided by BIKO are for 2008.
