Certification by country:Austria
Comments:In Austria the Minstry for Health (Bundesminsterium für Gesundheit) with its federal food authorities is in charge of implementation of the EU Organic Regulation and supervises the approved organic certification bodies. This ministry is also the partner of the EU in all regulatory affairs. The Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water ("Lebensministerium") is in charge of subsidies for organic farming (under the Autrian Agro-Environmental Programme ÖPUL) which are administered through the governmental agency AMA. The Lebensministerium also provides a lot of information on organic production. The Minstry for Economy, Family and Youth is in charge of accredition of organic certification bodies according to EN 45011/ ISO 65. There are 8 organic certification bodies approved for organic inspection in Austria, 1 of which is based in Germany. Austria has one of the highest percentages of organic producers with more than 10% of all farms being organic and more than 15% of the agricultural area being organic. About two thirds of all farms are members of one of the organic farming associations.
